China refuses trade deal that does not serve its interests
A spokesperson from the Commerce Ministry warned that Beijing would not tolerate such a deal, stating, “If that happens, China will never accept it and will resolutely counter to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”
This response follows comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump a day earlier, in which he suggested that the U.S. holds complete flexibility over the 90-day tariff reprieve set to expire on July 9. “We can do whatever we want,” Trump said, adding, “I’d like to just send letters out to everybody: ‘Congratulations, you’re paying 25 percent.’”
According to the Chinese spokesperson, Washington has imposed what it calls “reciprocal tariffs” on numerous trading partners since April. The spokesperson described this approach as a clear example of “unilateral bullying” that undermines the global trading system and destabilizes international commerce.
Beijing reiterated its consistent opposition to such practices and emphasized the need for fair and balanced solutions. The spokesperson added that China remains open to resolving trade and economic disputes through “equal consultations” and called on all nations to align with “fairness, justice, and historical correctness.” The statement concluded with a call to uphold international trade rules and defend the multilateral trading framework.
