China-India ties make ‘positive progress’

(MENAFN) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced on Monday that diplomatic relations between China and India have improved over the past eight months during a meeting with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in Beijing. Doval, also the special representative for the India-China border issue, was in the Chinese capital for a Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) national security advisers meeting.

Wang highlighted the positive progress in ties, emphasizing that China and India should view each other as development partners rather than threats or competitors. He stressed the importance of strengthening communication, building mutual trust, and resolving practical challenges to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes, metaphorically saying, “Only when the dragon and elephant dance together can there be a win-win outcome.”

Doval expressed India’s willingness to deepen cooperation with China in multilateral arenas and fully supports China’s role as SCO’s rotating president this year.

The Chinese foreign minister also called for careful handling of sensitive issues and maintaining peace along the border.

The recent diplomatic thaw follows the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan, where leaders Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping held talks. Relations had been tense since the 2020 Himalayan border clash that resulted in casualties on both sides.

In October 2024, both nations agreed to disengage from conflict zones and work toward restoring normal relations. Several proposals aimed at easing trade and investment barriers have gained traction, including easing visa restrictions for Chinese nationals, reducing tariffs and other trade barriers, and resuming direct flights.

This week, the sacred Kailash-Mansarovar pilgrimage resumed after five years, with Indian pilgrims crossing into Tibet, marking a significant step in cultural and religious ties between the countries.
