China Sends General-Purpose Large-Scale AI Model into Orbit

(MENAFN) A groundbreaking deployment has placed artificial intelligence processing capabilities directly into Earth's orbit, according to media on Wednesday, as a Chinese aerospace firm successfully integrated advanced AI technology onto operational satellites.

GuoXing Aerospace Technology announced Monday it had transmitted Alibaba's Qwen3 large language model to its pioneering orbital computing hub, enabling complete reasoning operations to occur beyond Earth's atmosphere without ground-based processing.

"This marks the world's first deployment of a general-purpose large-scale AI model from ground control to an operational satellite constellation in orbit," declared Wang Yabo, executive vice president of GuoXing Aerospace.

The company launched its initial 12-satellite computing cluster into space last May 2025, establishing the foundation for GuoXing Aerospace's orbital computing initiative.

Testing results revealed the Qwen3 system successfully executed numerous experiments, processing Earth-transmitted queries aboard the satellites and delivering responses back to the planet in under two minutes.

Wang disclosed GuoXing Aerospace's ambitious roadmap targeting a 2,800-satellite specialized computing network by 2035.

The constellation's next two satellite groups are slated for launch within 2025, with a 1,000-unit network targeted for completion by 2030, Wang confirmed.

Released in April 2025, Alibaba's Qwen3 AI system has achieved performance levels matching or surpassing US firm OpenAI's o1 model and Chinese competitor DeepSeek's R1 technology.
