Ghana Hails China’s Zero-Tariff Offer as Boost for Industry, Economy
Samuel Nii-Noi Ashong, a senior policy advisor on fiscal management at Ghana’s Ministry of Finance, called the initiative "remarkable and historic," emphasizing that Ghana should take advantage of it to transform its industrial landscape and strengthen its trade position with China in the coming years.
He shared these views during a one-day dialogue organized under the theme “China-Africa Zero Tariff: Opportunities for Ghana” by a Ghana-China friendship organization in Accra on Tuesday, as stated by reports.
Ashong noted that the preferential tariff arrangement aligns well with Ghana’s recently launched 24-hour economy policy. "With the right approach and interventions by the government, Ghana can maximize the opportunities and build strong export competitiveness," he said.
He also underlined that China’s zero-tariff program is non-reciprocal, meaning African nations do not need to remove tariffs on Chinese imports in exchange.
"Linking these concessions to technology-based capacity building, including knowledge transfer, targeted export promotion, and creating dedicated trade offices in China, will help promote Ghanaian-made goods directly to the 1.4 billion-consumer market in China," he highlighted.
