China Says UN Mandate Reform Should Deliver Real Results
Sun Lei, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, highlighted the increasingly turbulent international situation, noting growing global challenges and pressures on multilateralism and the United Nations, during his explanation of the vote on the UN General Assembly Draft Resolution on Mandate Creation, Implementation, and Review for an Efficient and Effective United Nations.
"China supports the UN in reforming and renewing itself, keeping pace with the times, and better fulfilling the mandates entrusted to it by member states," Sun said.
He emphasized that the resolution forms a key part of the UN80 Initiative, establishing guiding principles and actionable steps for improving the creation, implementation, and review of mandates. "We hope these principles and actions will be effectively implemented and provide useful guidance to member states and the Secretariat."
Sun added that the goal of mandate implementation review reform is to enhance the UN’s efficiency and effectiveness, revitalizing its authority and vitality. He stressed that reforms must adhere to the UN Charter, uphold leadership and equal participation of all member states, and advance the organization’s three pillars in a balanced manner.
