China Dispatches Ebola Expert Team to DRC

(MENAFN) China has dispatched a specialized medical team to the Democratic Republic of Congo to bolster the fight against a fast-spreading Ebola outbreak that the World Health Organization has designated a public health emergency of international concern, state-run media reported Tuesday.

The delegation departed Beijing in the early hours of Tuesday and will operate alongside Chinese medical personnel already on the ground in Congo, as well as local health and disease-control authorities, media reported.

The incoming specialists — seasoned veterans of epidemic response — will focus on Ebola prevention and treatment, deliver critical training to frontline healthcare workers, and extend support to Chinese nationals and institutions active across the Central African nation. Their broader mandate includes reinforcing Congo's institutional capacity for outbreak prevention, control, and long-term treatment.

China's existing medical contingent in Congo has already shifted to emergency footing, activating training protocols, emergency drills, and supply chain coordination, while sustaining frontline medical services to both local communities and Chinese citizens in the country.

The scale of the crisis is mounting. The WHO reported Friday that at least 134 confirmed cases have been recorded across Congo and neighboring Uganda, with 18 deaths logged among confirmed cases in both countries. Congolese health authorities warn that new suspected cases are continuing to emerge, with the cumulative total surpassing 1,000 since the outbreak was formally declared on May 15.

The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, concentrated across three volatile eastern Congolese provinces — Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu — regions already strained by years of conflict and humanitarian crisis.
