Taiwan Conducts Live-Fire HIMARS Drill Near Mainland China Amid Rising Tensions
The exercise took place on Wednesday and featured the use of US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), with reduced-range training rockets fired into the Taiwan Strait. Authorities in Taipei said the drill was designed to simulate responses to a potential invasion scenario and to demonstrate the systems’ mobility and rapid repositioning capabilities.
Officials stated that the operation focused on testing the “shoot-and-scoot” tactic, which emphasizes quick firing and immediate relocation to avoid counterattacks, according to reports.
The HIMARS system has an estimated range of up to 300 kilometers, theoretically placing parts of China’s southeastern coastal regions within reach. Taiwan has ordered additional HIMARS units from the United States and continues expanding its air defense and anti-ship capabilities.
China has consistently opposed US arms sales to Taiwan, viewing them as interference in its internal affairs and a violation of the One-China principle. While Washington does not formally recognize Taiwan as an independent state, it maintains close unofficial relations and remains Taipei’s primary arms supplier.
Beijing continues to assert that Taiwan is part of its territory and has warned against moves toward formal independence. Chinese leadership has stated that although peaceful reunification remains the preferred option, the use of force has not been ruled out in response to separatist actions, according to reports.
